What Gemini puts in your images
Google says it uses several provenance layers for images generated with its tools (Gemini, Imagen): a C2PA manifest (Content Credentials) and an IPTC tag embedded in the file, plus the SynthID watermark embedded directly in the pixels. Only the first two layers are metadata.
In a PNG, the C2PA manifest lives in a dedicated chunk named “caBX”, defined by the C2PA specification itself. In a JPEG, it typically sits in an APP11 segment. Platforms that read C2PA can use it to show an “AI-generated” label automatically.

Do Gemini images contain C2PA metadata?
According to Google, images generated with its tools (Gemini, Imagen) carry a C2PA manifest (Content Credentials) and an IPTC “Digital Source Type” tag identifying AI-generated content, on top of the SynthID watermark embedded in the pixels. Check your own files with the C2PA Image Checker.
Does removing the metadata reduce image quality?
No. The metadata is stored in separate blocks of the file, next to the pixels. Exif Injector removes it without re-encoding the image.
Does the tool remove the SynthID watermark?
No. SynthID is embedded directly in the image's pixels, not in the metadata. We don't touch it — Google says it's designed to survive cropping and compression, and removing it would be outside the scope of a metadata tool.
Can a platform still recognise my image as AI-generated?
Yes, it's possible. Removing metadata removes the label written in the file, not the SynthID watermark embedded in the pixels or any platform's own internal detectors.
Why clean metadata if I disclose AI anyway?
To deliver a clean final file: remove each tool's technical tags (Gemini, photo editor, timestamps), avoid an old tag contradicting your actual use, and write your own title, description and copyright for SEO.
Does this work for Imagen or Nano Banana too?
Yes, for container metadata and C2PA manifests, whatever Google tool was used to generate the image. The SynthID watermark embedded in the signal stays in place either way.
